Beginner's guide to crystal healing

The use of healing crystals isn’t a new practice; crystals have been associated with specific body parts and organs for centuries. Ancient civilizations used them for their powers and energy in rituals, medicine and divination. They have been used as talismans and amulets for protection throughout history.

Crystals are still very popular today; whether it is their use in litotherapy (see our article on celebrities who use the power of crystals to heal themselves) or their use in beauty products and technologies such as satellites, mobile phones, televisions, watches and computers.

How do crystals heal?
Crystals heal in a holistic way—a word that comes from the Greek "holos" meaning totality—thanks to their vibration and resonance. The holistic approach takes into account the whole personality, thus acting on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. In contrast, traditional medicine offers an approach centered on an organ or the symptom(s) of a disease.

One of the first researchers to look at the power of crystals in a scientific approach was Marcel Vogel (1917-1991), an IBM researcher for 27 years and inventor of the magnetic coating for hard drives, phosphate technology and liquid crystal systems.

As he watched the crystals grow under a microscope, Vogel noticed that they took the shape of whatever he was thinking about. His hypothesis was that these vibrations were the result of the constant assembly and disassembly of bonds between molecules.

He also studied the metaphysical power of crystal quartz and proved that crystals can store thoughts, much like audio cassettes use magnetic energy to record sound.

How to choose your crystals?
Learn the basics (you can check out our stones guide as well as our suggestions for beginners), then let your intuition guide you. The point is to let your senses guide you to what you really need, rather than letting your mind choose stones based on what you think you need. It is also said that crystals choose us, rather than the other way around.

Once you've chosen a crystal, you can focus on its shape and color. Each shape has a specific use for healing.

Round crystals (tumbled stones, eggs, balls) emit energy evenly around them, while pointed ones (points, wands) direct positive energy inward and negative energy out of the body, or in both directions if they are double-pointed.

Dark crystals usually have protective virtues, while pale crystals are stones of purity, calm, and love.

How to use your crystals?
Once you've chosen your crystals, you need to take care of them so that they can work to their full potential.

A cleansing routine includes four steps, which we have already detailed in this article.

Where to keep your crystals?
You can keep your crystals where you need them, whether it's in your bed, specific places in your home, at your office, or even in your purse so they follow you everywhere you go. Several people wear them against their skin like Miranda Kerr who wears them in her bra.

Can crystal healing harm me?
In the hands of a malicious person, or if they have not been purified (you can read our article on the subject here) the crystals could carry negative intentions and energies that will not serve you in your healing process.
